It's bad enough that Amelia's parents are dead and she's twenty-six and unmarried, but when her brother Jack comes to ask her for money to cover her gambling debts, she can't take it anymore and does something unlike her: Amelia marches toward the Duke of Midnight and dances with him.
It's just a dance, right? That's what Amelia thought so, too, until it leads to her following Spencer Dumarque--The Duke of Moreland (A.K.A. "Duke of Midnight")-- outside and discovering that he's a suspect in the murder of the Stud Club's founder. All enough to make any woman run from the Duke, but Amelia can't fight her budding feelings for him and enters into a passion-filled proposal. Will Jack's gambling problems, Spencer and her differences, and the fact that people believe he's a murderer cause the end of the relationship?
ONE DANCE WITH A DUKE was a delightful read. This was my first Tessa Dare book and let me say, I am so gonna read anything else she writes!
Amelia is an unconventional woman in the romance genre. Curvy and not skinny, not the obvious beauty, and an alpha female, Amelia was the type of heroine whom I like to read about in novel. She is fiercely loyal to her family and did not put up with anything that Spencer did. Even though Spencer is an alpha male, she held her own against him and did not let him control her.The witty banters between Spencer and Amelia were fun and great to read about. Spencer was conceited and a jerk, but I liked it when his soft side showed up when he was talking to his horses. Both the hero and the heroine are flawed and that's what makes them believable characters. Sure, sometimes their actions and words got on my nerves, but they were just being realistic.
While there is the mystery concerning who killed the founder of the Stud Club, it not a big part of the book and I didn't mind. Most of the book is about Amelia and Spencer's growing relationship which was cute and rocky. The secondary characters are well-drawn as well and I'm looking forward to reading their stories in the sequels. ONE DANCE WITH A DUKE was charming, funny at times, and a great, enchanting read.
Check out the funny trailer!
